Today I set off up the fell, aiming to go over Cross Fell. It’s one of the toughest Pennine Way days, taking walkers over England’s highest hill outside of the Lake District. Cross Fell is 893m high. Not a huge … Continue reading →

  • BBC The Apprentice – Down on the Farm

Blog of Stuart Allen FCMI 23 May 2013 | 9:13 am

BBC The Apprentice – Down on the Farm It’s a short and sweet blog for two reasons this week, one I have too little week left at the end of my work and two, I found last night’s show a bit bland! It’s week four already and the task is to open a farm shop! I think that is all the candidates heard (or is that herd?) and missed the key element. The task is to make a PROFIT and they should have focused more on this fact than their individual egos! The teams are unfairly mixed up as the two narrowly surviving girls from last week (Uzma & Natalie) are sent to the boys whilst some of the stronger boys; Miles, Jason & Jordan are sent in the opposite direction. Luisa & Rebecca slug it out for PM and it is clear Luisa has the most relevant experience, Rebecca counter punches with “It’s not rocket science is it?” Despite this amazing deduction Luisa gets the vote and is determined to get Team Evolve their first win. The team decides on Buffalo meat as their core product in the hope of creating a stampede to the door of their Buffalocal store! At £20 for a couple of steaks,[…]

  • Curation – A Disturbance in the Force

Stop Doing Dumb Things to Customers » Blog 23 May 2013 | 8:50 am

Curation – A Disturbance in the Force As you know – I’ve just curated the Carnival of HR for the second time. The response from all quarters was very encouraging thank you, and the blog had its busiest day so far this month. I appreciate the support – and before the Carnival packs up and heads on to the next destination I wanted to share three things I learned from the curation process. Deadline Despite marking time in my diary to bring the Carnival together, I struggled to get going because I got hung up on the submission deadline. This meant I waited until everyone had contributed before I began to plan and write up the curation. I also accepted late submissions, though I didn’t try to factor them into the Carnival theme. The next time I do something like this I will seek an earlier deadline so that I can begin the curation process sooner. Time It takes a lot of time to curate a Carnival. Each post needs to be read and considered. Does it fit the theme? What is it about each post that I should reference in the curation summary? It took me over six hours to pull everything together and whilst I[…]

  • Dear Informal Learning

    Thinking About Learning 20 May 2013 | 1:21 pm

Dear Informal Learning Dear Informal Learning, I understand from previous correspondence that you are interested in coming into my organisation and selling your wares. I’m always up for a laugh looking for opportunities to waste my time ways to help support people who want to learn and develop while at work. So sure, come on in. There are some things, though, that I’d like your help with so I know better how to make people aware of who and what you actually have to offer? Please answer the below in good time before your impending arrival. 1) Apparently you’re already here? I’ve been getting the message from different quarters that you’re already in and amongst the people in the organisation. When did you actually do this? Was it when we allowed people to read books in their break time? Or was it when people had access to the internet? Maybe it was when people were allowed to access various online social networks? I’m confused because, if we did this without you, what are we going to do with you when we formally recognise you? Which leads me onto my next question… 2) I understand there won’t even be a “you”. You are some[…]

  • Bullshit to Brilliance

Business strategy coaching : The Busy Fool blog 1 Apr 2013 | 7:26 pm

You Can’t Bullshit Your Way to Brilliance   There’s a lot of B-S talked in self-development circles about “faking it until you make it”.  The theory goes that you have to pretend you are already successful, and then you will become successful.  So we end up with legions of back-bedroom entrepreneurs all going on as if the virtual office in the prestige building really is where they and their cohort of “associates” beaver away at servicing their myriad big-name clients.  Not that anyone’s fooled, of course.  Except perhaps other silly fakers. You see, there’s a problem with “fake it til you make it”: it’s that word – Fake. People really aren’t that unconscious any more.  As the consciousness revolution progresses, and more and more people learn to trust their intuition, it  is becoming increasingly dangerous to pretend that you’re something you’re not.   People are naturally repelled from what they sense is false – and attracted to what they feel is authentic. There is another reason why faking it can hold you back.  Many people start to believe their own bullshit, to believe they really are already successful.  There are two problems with that: firstly they unconsciously stop trying so[…]

  • Animated Joy!

    grow the people 10 Feb 2013 | 11:02 am

Disney are still masters of a great story. This animated short has been in cinemas with their latest feature Wreck-it-Ralph (an AWESOME film by the way!)The short below is actually very significant in animation terms. It heralds a new technology that allows animators to draw on traditional hand drawn methods and 3D digital content. For us though, it's just a simple and beautiful story well told.Follow the link below to watch the trailer and the full version on YouTube. • Luther Pendragon – Dancing with the Devil

    JustinMcKeown's Blog 8 Feb 2013 | 9:29 am

Luther Pendragon – Dancing with the Devil The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has dropped Luther Pendragon, claiming it did so as soon as it learned the agency has decided to work for tobacco company Phillip Morris. Good! I’m glad that the ABPI has distanced itself from an agency that is prepared to promote a company that sells products that kill and injure the health of millions each year. But why would a firm like Luther Pendragon be willing to damage its own reputation? Taking  cash from PMI comes at the same time as a new graphic ad campaign showing a cancerous tumour growing from a cigarette.  Perhaps this conversation that I once had with the leader of an international PR company sheds some light. Me: With the rapid expansion of the business across the world, how can you be sure that the company is acting ethically in each territory?  For example, how do you know that there is no “rogue” office working with the tobacco industry? Or working with a despotic regime?  Leader: It is not as easy as you make it sound with obvious Good Guys and Bad Guys. Many believe that everyone has a right to PR representation, including the tobacco industry. Some people might feel uncomfortable[…]

  • What If The Problem Is You?

    Onlignment 5 Feb 2013 | 10:00 am

In 2013 I’m celebrating a notable personal milestone – it’s been ten years since I entered the world of elearning. In that time I’ve seen many things change (where do I start?) but sadly some things stay the same, and the L&D department is often one of them. In a previous post I mentioned the Corporate Leadership Council’s L&D Team Capabilities Survey, which Charles Jennings had referred to at the 2012 Learning Technologies Conference. According to the survey, when asked if they would recommend working with L&D, barely 14% of corporate leaders said yes, they would actively do so. Of the remainder, 34% had no strong opinion and just over half would actually recommend not working with L&D. And they’ve given us the reason why; the same report states that less than a quarter of line management were satisfied with L&D’s impact on achieving business outcomes. Stop reading for a moment and let that sink in. More than half of the manager’s surveyed would recommend not working with L&D and over three quarters were dissatisfied with L&D’s impact on business outcomes. The root of this is a lack of ownership on the part of L&D. This isn’t about ownership for[…]

  • Training Zone Book Review: ‘How to Make Partner and Still Have a Life’

    mentoring Mullarkey 11 Jan 2013 | 12:13 pm

Training Zone Book Review: ‘How to Make Partner and Still Have a Life’ As some of you might be aware, the website Training Zone is discussed content on training, learning and professional development, and everything in between. Aside from general industry discussions and information, it also has a section dedicated to book reviews that are of interest to those in the HR/L&D field, with a wide variety of topics and titles being covered each month. This month I read and reviewed ‘How to Make Partner and Still Have a Life’ for the site well I saw this month, technically I started reading it in November and only have reviewed just now (please take this as a sign of my own inefficiency and not a criticism of the book!). The review shall be available on the site shortly, but for a preview here it is on mentoring Mullarkey – enjoy! The first thing to say about ‘How to make…’ is that if you do not work in a law firm or professional services do not ignore this book – it has content that is very transferable to any individual looking to structure and plan their professional development and career management. In some ways the title does the book an injustice – although it does provide an overview of the partner track within law[…]

  • Why the long silence?

Franklin Whybrow Consulting Ltd 16 May 2012 | 1:51 pm

Why the long silence? So I’ve been quiet on the blog recently for a couple of reasons. Firstly, much as I’m enjoying this series of The Apprentice, it hasn’t engaged me to the same degree as its predecessors. Maybe I’ve seen these same tasks too many times before. Or maybe I’ve seen this cast of candidate characters too many times before. With my HDS hat on (the Hogan Development Survey psychometric) I’m on the look out for dysfunctional leadership behaviours. But every time I spot a ‘dark side’ with the potential to de-rail a particular candidate, it looks like a carbon copy of that exhibited by last year’s identikit candidate. Instead of Charming-Manipulative Jedi Jim, for example, simply insert smooth-talking sinister-eyed salesman Stephen Brady. We’ve also lost (along with lots of dead wood) two of the most interesting candidates too early in the process. Bilyana Apostolova, had she not talked her way to the sack in week one, promised to be painfully brilliant television. And Katie Wright, who was nearly caught out in that opening week when she ‘went missing’, was shaping up to be an interesting contender as she demonstrated both amused detachment and a penchant for persuading project managers to take perilous risks. After her near-sacking experience, Katie started[…]
